Mallikarjun Kharge is an Indian politician and served as the Union Minister of Railways of India. He is a member of the 16th Lok Sabha of India. He hails from the Gulbarga constituency of Karnataka and belongs to the Indian National Congress (INC) political party. He is a senior-most Karnataka politician and was the chairperson of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee during the Karnataka State Assembly Elections in the year 2008. Kharge is well known as a competent leader with a clean public portrait and well versed in the legislation, administration  and dynamics of politics.

Mallikarjun Kharge

Mallikarjun Kharge is an Indian politician and served as the Union Minister of Railways of India. He is a member of the 16th Lok Sabha of India. He hails from the Gulbarga constituency of Karnataka and belongs to the Indian National Congress (INC) political party. He is a senior-most Karnataka politician and was the chairperson of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee during the Karnataka State Assembly Elections in the year 2008. Kharge is well known as a competent leader with a clean public portrait and well versed in the legislation, administration  and dynamics of politics.

Mr Kharge put forth the policy of  vacancies for weaker sections, for the first time in the country to fill up the posts of teachers and brought up several changes in the education department. He introduced Land Reforms Act and more than 400 land tribunals were constituted to accelerate the transfer of land rights. Under his rule, lakhs of acres of government land  were distributed to small and marginal farmers. He was alone responsible for the immediate modernization of Police Department. Serveral dams and barriers were built for providng irrigational amenities to the farmers especially in semi-dry region.

1990 - 1992 He was elected as Cabinet Minister of Revenue and Rural Development and Panchayati Raj
1992 - 1994 He was elected as Cabinet Minister of  Co-operation,Large and Medium Industries.
1996 - 1999 He was elected as Leader of Congress Legislature Party and Leader of Opposition, Karnataka
1999 - 2004 He was elected as Cabinet Minister of  Infrastructure Development, Home and Minor Irrigation
2004 - 2006 He was elected as Cabinet Minister of Water Resources and Transport
2005 He was elected as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee
2008 - 2009 He was elected as Leader of Congress Legislature Party and Leader of Opposition
2009 He was elected to 15th Lok Sabha
